Travelling with two young kids and my parents, who are both over 70, is always an adventure. It’s full of laughter, a few hiccups, and plenty of unforgettable moments. The kids bring all the energy, my parents bring the calm and the stories, and I’m somewhere in the middle trying to keep everyone happy, fed and sun-creamed.
One thing I’ve learnt from our family holidays is how important it is to have the right over 60s travel insurance. My parents might still be young at heart, but knowing they’re properly covered means we can all relax and enjoy ourselves. It just takes away that little worry at the back of your mind, especially when travelling abroad.

Spain: Our Family Favourite
Spain has become our go-to destination. We’ve got a family friend who lives there, so we visit quite often, and it feels like a second home now. The kids love the beaches, splashing in the pool, and eating far too much ice cream. My parents adore the sunshine and the slower pace of life, and I love seeing everyone so content in one place.
We’ve worked out a nice rhythm when we travel. Mornings are for exploring, then we take long lazy lunches, followed by a siesta or a swim in the pool. With both kids and grandparents on the trip, it’s all about finding a balance between adventure and rest. It’s not about doing everything, it’s about enjoying the time together.
Some of my favourite memories are the simple ones. Sitting outside in the evening as the sun goes down, my parents telling the kids stories from their own childhood holidays, and everyone laughing together. Those moments are what family travel is really about.
Why Cruises Work So Well For Us
Cruises have become a bit of a family tradition now. My parents love them because they only have to unpack once but still get to see new places. The kids think it’s the most exciting thing ever, and I love that everything we need is in one place.
There’s so much for everyone to do. My parents enjoy the quiet lounges and deck views, the kids love the pool and activities, and I can actually sit down for five minutes knowing everyone’s happy. Each port brings a new place to explore, but we never feel rushed, which makes it perfect for both generations.
Cruises are also great for accessibility. Everything’s nearby, there’s always someone to help, and it’s all designed to be as easy as possible. When you’re travelling with kids, grandparents and luggage, that really does make a difference.
Planning Makes All The Difference
If you’re travelling with both little ones and older family members, planning ahead is key. I always make sure medication is packed, snacks are within reach, and travel documents are easy to find. We plan travel days so there’s no rushing around, and I always try to keep at least one day free for rest wherever we go.
Travel insurance is something I always tick off the list early. The right over 60s travel insurance makes such a difference, giving us peace of mind if anything unexpected happens. Once that’s sorted, we can focus on the fun stuff, like choosing where to go first or which restaurant to try that evening.
Family Holidays Are Always Worth It
Travelling with kids and grandparents isn’t always easy, but it’s absolutely worth it. There are moments of chaos, of course, but they’re balanced by moments of pure joy. Watching my parents and the kids share experiences together, from exploring new places to giggling over silly jokes, is something I’ll never take for granted.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a sunny week in Spain, a cruise around Europe or a short UK break, these holidays bring us closer as a family. With a little planning, lots of patience, and the right insurance in place, travelling with the over 70s (and the under sevens) can be the most rewarding adventure of all.
