Happy 2026, everyone! I honestly can’t believe we’re already here. It feels like only yesterday I was flapping around trying to organise Christmas, and now we’re staring down the barrel of a new year. If you’re like me, a busy mum of two living in the heart of Hull, your life is probably a constant cycle of the school run, grocery dashes at St Stephen’s, and trying to find five minutes to drink a brew while it’s still actually hot.
My big goal for this year isn’t a “new me” in the sense of some crazy diet. Honestly, who has the energy? My goal is just to feel a bit more comfortable in my own skin, and on my own feet. Since the kids are getting older and more active, I feel like I’m constantly on the go. Whether we’re heading for a windy walk at The Deep or chasing them around Pearson Park, my poor feet have been taking a hammering lately.
That’s why I’ve been looking into ways to make my daily life a bit more “cushioned.” I recently discovered some incredible shoe inserts for different foot types that have genuinely changed the game for my morning school run. I’ve always been one of those mums who wears “fashionable” trainers that actually offer zero support, but adding a proper pair of shoe inserts has meant I’m not limping by the time I get back to the car. It’s such a small change, but in 2026, I’m all about those tiny “life hacks” that actually make a difference to my energy levels.
Living in Hull, we do a lot of walking. It’s just what we do! But if you aren’t looking after your arches, those “quick trips” into town can end up causing back pain. I’ve started being much more intentional about the gear I use. It’s not just about the shoes; it’s about what’s inside them. If you’re a parent on your feet all day, you really should check out how different shoe inserts can stabilize your gait and stop that end-of-day ache.
Self-Care Beyond the Feet
Of course, self-care in 2026 isn’t just about my feet (though they are very grateful). I’m also trying to get back into a bit of “Hull culture.” We are so lucky to have places like the Ferens Art Gallery, and I’ve made a vow to visit once a month, even if it’s just for 20 minutes of quiet reflection. It’s free, it’s beautiful, and it’s a great way to clear my head.
I’ve also been trying to support more local businesses. I’m a big fan of the Beasley’s Clothing in Hepworth’s Arcade for unique finds. Supporting local makes me feel more connected to the city, and honestly, the staff there are always so lovely to chat with when I’m having one of those “mum-brain” days.
Finally, I’ve been following The Motherload for a while now. If you haven’t joined their community, you really should. It’s a group of non-judgmental parents who just get it. Whenever I feel like I’m failing at the whole “parenting” thing, a quick scroll through their community reminds me that we’re all just winging it together.
So, here’s to a 2026 where we walk a bit further, feel a bit better, and maybe, just maybe, drink our tea while it’s actually warm. Let me know in the comments what your local Hull goals are for the year!
